Please note that I have not received written confirmation of legality from the manufacturers themselves, unless specifically noted next to the product. I am, however, extremely sensitive to illegal ingredients and have had no reactions from these products. It is adviseable, though, to always obtain a written statement from the company to verify whether the product has any illegal lingredients that are not listed on the label.

If you receive a written statement from the manufacturer proving any of these products to not be SCD-legal, please forward a scanned copy of the statement to me, or forward a copy of the email to me at nomorecrohnsmagazine@gmail.com. I will review it and take the product off of this page. Thanks! |
Additionally, if you have discovered a product that you believe to be legal, I'd love to hear about it! Write to me at nomorecrohnsmagazine@gmail.com!
To see a few more products, see our facebook page NoMoreCrohns.com. Note: As with any prepared product, make a note of whether it gives you any symptoms. If so, discontinue use. Not all companies detail which ingredients make up less than 2% of the total product, or whether they add anything to aid the production process, so a sure way of finding out what is in the product is to write to them and ask them for a list of ingredients in writing before you try a product. Refer to "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" for more instructions about prepared products. For a sample letter that you could use to write to a food manufacturer, click here. |
Note: I waited until I didn't have any Crohn's symptoms before I added prepared products to my diet. That way, I could be sure to tell if I had a reaction to a product and discontinue use. Any time you eat something prepared by others, you take a risk. But if the product is legal, and it makes your life a little bit easier, that risk could be worth it.
I share these with you not to say that I know they are legal but to show you how I very carefully have added a few products that look legal and that have given me no symptoms. Then you can make your own decision about whether you would want to try them, write to them, or not try them. It's up to you! :)

Trader Joe's
Trader Joe's Customer Service stated to me in an email about whether their products contain anything other than what is stated on the label, and about the peach halves in particular: "Thank you for contacting us with your concerns. Trader Joe's will always list every ingredient used in any of the Trader Joe's brand name products. There is nothing else added to the Peach Halves other than what is listed on the ingredient label. Thank you for shopping at Trader Joe's. Kellye, Trader Joe's Customer Relations." ![]() Larabar - Make sure to choose a legal flavor with fruit and nuts only such as: Ginger Snap, Pecan Pie, Cherry Pie, Cashew Cookie, Apple Pie, Pistachio, Cinnamon Roll, Peanut Butter Cookie, Peanut Butter & Jelly, Carrot Cake, or Coconut Cream Pie (but be cautious about coconut especially at the beginning of the diet, as coconut is very fibrous and could be an irritant on a healing digestive system.)
Also at Trader Joe's: Small bags of almond flour (be aware though that some people do not do well with it because it contains the skins), dried unsweetened fruit, some types of fruit leather with just fruit and preservative - avoid those with "natural flavors", and unsalted nuts.
Apple + Strawberry bars, as well as Apple + Mango, and Apple + Coconut. Be careful with coconut when starting the diet, as BTVC states. I wouldn't recommend eating the Apple + Banana bars as they are made with bananas that may not have been speckled. |
Costco
I love to get everything possible at Costco, because it really helps save money! Since we eat so many of the same items, buying in bulk makes sense for us on the SCD. Also at Costco: Kirkland brand sugar-free vanilla extract with vanilla & water & alcohol only.

Several years ago they changed their formula to contain Vitamins & E, but changed it back because so many people contacted them. My understanding is that Dole Pineapple *in its own juice* is SCD-legal again.

It has been recently reported that Larabar was sold to General Mills and they have not verified legal ingredients with a letter. I, however, still eat legal flavors with no problem.
The official SCD website lists decaffeinated products as illegal. However, it explains that this is because SOME decaf products might contain chemicals left over from the decaffeination process. When I was on the Long Island List Serve and Elaine was answering questions, Elaine verified with Lipton that Lipton uses a legal process to make their decaf black tea. I used Lipton decaf for a long time. I then switched to Twinings decaf black. The Twinings website states that they use liquid carbon dioxide that leaves no residue on the tea. Therefore, this looks legal. I have used this tea and have had no symptoms. Read more on their website: http://www.twiningsusa.com/static/FAQ/FAQ.aspx
Also available at grocery stores: various brands of jarred crushed garlic containing garlic, oil and preservative.
